Alexandra Palace in London, venue of the World Darts Championship

The 27th edition of the William Hill World Darts Championship 2020 was hosted by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) from December 13, 2019 to January 1, 2020 . The venue was for the thirteenth time the Alexandra Palace in London .

Peter Wright won the tournament with a 7-3 final victory against last year's winner Michael van Gerwen . The Scot became PDC world champion for the first time.

Tournament course

The Dutch player Raymond van Barneveld , who was five-time world champion (most recently in 2007 ) and former number 1 in the world rankings , had announced in advance that he would end his career after this world championship. He lost in his first round encounter Darin Young from the United States . Fallon Sherrock , who became the first woman in history to win a game at a world championship, caused a big surprise in the first round . Sherrock also played strong in the second round, defeating Mensur Suljović , number 11 on the seeding list.

With Rob Cross , Michael Smith and Ian White , three players from the top ten of the PDC Order of Merit were eliminated in their first round. Also gerwyn price , which was placed at number three, had the duel against William O'Connor from Ireland problems. In the fifth and last set, the Irishman led 3-2 legs, but threw on the wrong double field. Price made a profit from this mistake and secured victory. Noel Malicdem of the Philippines was also close to beating a favorite, Scots Peter Wright . However, Malicdem missed his matchdart on the bullseye, Wright saved himself with a 140 finish in the Sudden Death Leg, which he won.

mode

The tournament was played in the best of sets or first to sets mode and the double-out variant .

The first player to win three legs won one set . The first player to throw exactly 501 points won a leg . The last throw of a leg had to be on a double field.

If the score was 2: 2 legs in a decisive final set , the two-clear legs rule applied (except in the first round) . This states that a player had to be two legs ahead to win the game. Managed this neither of the two players, the game at the score of 5: 5 was in the legs by a " sudden death - Leg " decided.

Attendees

qualification

As in the previous year, 96 players took part in the World Cup, this year they came from 28 different countries. The field of participants consisted of the 32 best placed players of the PDC Order of Merit of November 25, 2019, the top 32 unqualified players of the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit and 32 international players of the World Championship International Qualifiers.

Two of the 24 additional places were given to female participants. There was also one qualifier each from Africa, China, India, Japan, New Zealand and South America as well as four qualifiers from Europe (East, South, South-West and West).

The seeded players (Top 32 of the PDC Order of Merit) only entered the tournament in the second round.
