Michael Smith (born September 18, 1990 in St Helens , Merseyside ) is an English darts player with the Professional Darts Corporation . At the PDC World Championship he was runner -up in 2019. His play name is Bully Boy . Michael Smith's mentor and manager is Gary Anderson from Scotland .
Career
Smith caused a sensation for the first time in professional darts in 2010 when he was among the last 32 players at the UK Open 2010 and previously defeated renowned players such as Peter Manley .
On February 27th, 2011 he won his first PDC Pro Tour event with the title of UK Open Qualifier 2 by defeating Dave Chisnall 6: 5 in the final. Since winning this title he has been a professional darts player and part of the PDC darts circuit .
He made his debut at a world championship in 2012 , where he was eliminated in the first round, however, with 0: 3 against Co Stompé . In 2012 the Englishman was able to establish himself solidly in the PDC Order of Merit rankings for the first time and was again involved in the 2013 World Cup , but this time failed due to a strong Raymond van Barneveld with 0: 3. Regardless of this, Smith continued to make a name for himself and won the PDC World Youth Championship in 2013, for example .
Smith achieved great fame at the 2014 World Cup when he defeated Phil Taylor 4-3 in the second round . In the round of 16 he then failed to Peter Wright , who played the tournament's highest 3-dart average with 105 points.
On January 3, 2016, Smith was named for the first time in his career to compete in the Premier League Darts .
In the Premier League Darts 2018 he qualified for the playoffs. At the 2019 World Cup , he defeated Nathan Aspinall in the semifinals. In the final he met Michael van Gerwen , to whom he had to admit defeat 3: 7.
At the end of the Premier League Darts 2019 he finished 7th. At the World Matchplay 2019 he reached the final after victories over Jamie Hughes, Max Hopp , Mervyn King and Glen Durrant , which he lost to Rob Cross at 13:18 .
