Youth career
Van Gerwen says he started playing darts at the age of 13. At the age of 14 he reached the finals of the Primus Masters Youth 2003 . After that he won many youth titles, including the German Open 2005 , the German Gold Cup 2005 , the Norway Open 2005 , the Northern Ireland Open 2005 , the Swedish Open 2005 and the Dutch Youth Championship 2005 , which he also won in 2006. He also won the Norway Open 2005 and Northern Ireland Open 2005 in the adult division.
Career at BDO
From 2003 to 2007 van Gerwen played for the darts association BDO . He reached the semi-finals of the Bavaria World Darts Trophy 2006 . He lost that to Martin Adams , but almost played a 9-darter and only missed the last dart on the double-12. He also played the highest possible checkout during the tournament with 170. In the further course of the season van Gerwen managed to maintain his good performance and at 17 years and 174 days he became the youngest winner of the Winmau World Masters 2006 .
Given his good performance, rumors arose that van Gerwen would join the competing darts association PDC . During the World Darts Trophy 2006 he gave a press conference in which he denied all rumors and confirmed that he would stay with the BDO. In addition, van Gerwen refused to participate in the PDC World Championship, in which he would have been allowed to take part as the first placed on the Dutch darts rankings. The starting place thus freed up went to the runner-up Rico Vonck .
In the run-up to the BDO World Cup in 2007, van Gerwen was considered a favorite by the bookmakers, but was eliminated in the first round against Gary Robson .
On the night of the final of the world championship, Dutch television announced that van Gerwen would join the PDC together with Vincent van der Voort and Jelle Klaasen .
Career with the PDC
Van Gerwen first came in 88th in the PDC Order of Merit . Although he previously played with the BDO, he was allowed to take part in some PDC competitions in the Netherlands, including the Holland Open 2006 , even before he switched to the PDC.
On January 20, 2007, he made his debut at the Stan James Players Championships in Gibraltar, beating Andy Hamilton in the first round before losing to fellow countryman Roland Scholten in the round of 16 . The next day he won against Raymond van Barneveld in the first round and then lost in the quarter-finals to Alan Warriner-Little . He continued his good form and beat Phil Taylor 3-0 at the Masters of Darts . All three sets were decided in the decisive leg, which van Gerwen won with 14, 12 and 12 darts. In the semifinals against van Barneveld, he then played his first nine-o'clock , but still lost the game.
Until then, van Gerwen had no success on television. He made his debut at the 2007 UK Open , where he lost to Colin Osborne in the round of 32 . For the Las Vegas Desert Classics 2007 , however, he could not qualify and lost in round two of the World Matchplay 2007 in Blackpool against Ronnie Baxter with 12:14, although he was in the lead with 12:10 and was only one leg short of victory . He delivered his best performance at the PDC World Darts Championship in 2008 when he lost to Taylor in the first round but had a match dart.
Van Gerwen ended his losing streak when he beat Vincent van der Voort 6-3 at the Players Championship in Taunton on April 11, 2009 , earning him £ 6,000 for the Order of Merit. At the first edition of the PDC U-21 World Championship he was defeated by the Englishman Arron Monk in the final, which was played in the run-up to the final of the PDC World Darts Championship 2011 .
At the 2012 World Matchplay he threw a nine-charter in the round of 16 against Steve Beaton and won the match 13: 9. He won his first major tournament title in the PDC at the World Grand Prix 2012 when he defeated Mervyn King 6: 4 sets in the final . After that, his career at the PDC began to rise steeply. In the quarter-finals of the 2013 World Cup , he defeated the reigning double world champion Adrian Lewis in a high-class match with 5: 4 sets , with Lewis awarding two match darts in the decisive set. In the semifinals, he also managed another nine-dog against James Wade . In the immediately following leg he had another chance for the perfect game, but missed the final double. So he achieved 17 perfect darts in a row. This exceeded the previous record of Phil Taylor , who threw 16 perfect darts in 2010. On January 1, 2013 van Gerwen lost the final of the World Championship against Taylor with 4: 7 sets, despite a 4: 2 set lead, but was able to beat him a few months later in the final of the Premier League Darts 2013 with 10: 8.
On January 1, 2014, MVG won its first world title in the final of the 2014 World Cup against the Scotsman Peter Wright , replacing Phil Taylor, who had previously been the leader in the Order of Merit . At the 2015 World Cup , van Gerwen was eliminated in the semi-finals against eventual winner Gary Anderson . The 2015 World Matchplay won van Gerwen in the final against James Wade with 18:12, while in the final of the World Grand Prix just under Robert Thornton 4: was beaten fifth
In 2015 van Gerwen won the Grand Slam of Darts for the first time and thus he was only the second player to win every major PDC tournament at least once. At the 2016 World Cup , he was eliminated in the round of 16 after a high-class and exciting match with 3: 4 sets against his compatriot Raymond van Barneveld. He won the Premier League for the second time in 2016 when he clearly defeated Adrian Lewis and Phil Taylor with 11: 4 and 11: 3 legs in the semifinals and finals, respectively. In 2016 van Gerwen also won all other TV tournaments that count for the PDC Order of Merit; including the World Matchplay , the World Grand Prix and the Grand Slam of Darts .
The year 2017 started for van Gerwen by winning the PDC World Championship , in the final he was able to prevail 7: 3 against Gary Anderson. On February 10, 2017, van Gerwen threw two 9- darts in a game against Ryan Murray at a UK Open qualification tournament as the second dart player ever after Phil Taylor in a game .
In May of the same year he won the Premier League for the third time . In the semifinals he defeated Gary Anderson, in the final he won 11:10 against Peter Wright . In the semifinals of the PDC World Championship 2018 van Gerwen lost against the Englishman and later world champion Rob Cross with 5: 6 and was therefore unable to defend his title from the previous year. In the course of the year, apart from the World Grand Prix, he was unable to win any major tournament that was included in the Order of Merit. He was often eliminated early in the tournament, such as during the World Matchplay (1st round) or the European Championship (2nd round).
On April 26, 2018, van Gerwen was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands .
During the 2019 World Cup , he defeated Gary Anderson in the semifinals 6-1. He won the final 7-3 against Michael Smith . At the invitation tournament The Masters , he won the final 11: 5 against James Wade. In May 2019 he was able to defend his title in the Premier League again , in the final he defeated Rob Cross 11: 5. Later in the season, he won the Premier League for the fourth time in a row and took his fifth title at the World Grand Prix .
