Robert Thornton (born July 17, 1967 in Ayrshire ) is a Scottish darts player . His nickname is The Thorn and his enema music is I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers .
Career
After not playing darts for 20 years, he started again in 2002. In 2005 he qualified for the BDO World Championship and reached the quarter-finals there, where he lost to Darryl Fitton . Completely surprisingly he won the Winmau World Masters in 2007 , where he prevailed against Darryl Fitton in the final.
During the BDO World Championship in 2008 he reached the quarter-finals again, but failed 3: 4 to Martin Adams . However, he proved his class when he won the Dutch Open in 2008. After qualifying for the main round of the UK Open, he moved from BDO to PDC in May 2008 . Relatively quickly, within just nine months, he made it into the top 32 ranks of the Order of Merit . With that he was automatically qualified for the PDC World Championship .
At the Players Championship Finals 2009 Robert Thornton reached the final, which he lost to Phil Taylor . In the final of the UK Open 2012, however, he was able to defeat Taylor and thus won his first major tournament at the PDC.
On October 8, 2014, he was involved in the game against James Wade in the first TV game in which both players threw a nine-darter . It was also Thornton's first nine-darter in front of television cameras.
In 2015 he won the European Darts Open in Düsseldorf .
In October 2015 he also won his second PDC Major tournament, the World Grand Prix . In one of the best and most exciting Grand Prix finals, he prevailed against defending champion Michael van Gerwen with 5: 4 sets. It was his better check-out rate that gave him the win, even though he had the worse three-dart average (90 to 96). Thornton received the highest tournament prize money of his career to date for the win with a bonus of £ 100,000.
