Daryl Gurney (born March 22, 1986 in Londonderry ) is a Northern Irish darts player .
Career
BDO: 2004 to 2013
Daryl Gurney started his career in 2004 in the BDO . His breakthrough came in 2009. He reached the final of the WDF Europe Cup , which he lost to Mark Webster from Welsh . In the same year he took part in the BDO World Championship . He made it to the last sixteen and was defeated there by the eventual winner, Martin Adams . In 2012 he won several tournaments. He won the England Masters , Tom Kirby Memorial Trophy and the Northern Ireland Open .
PDC: Since 2013
Due to his success in 2012, Gurney decided to switch to the PDC . There he immediately qualified for the PDC World Championship 2013 . Gurney met Robert Marijanović in the preliminary round , whom he defeated 4: 3 and thus moved into the main draw of the World Cup. His first-round opponent was Andy Smith . Gurney prevailed with 3: 1 and lost in round 2 against Dave Chisnall with 4: 1.
After the good result at the World Cup, a long dry spell followed. He missed qualifying for the 2014 World Cup . After that, the results were again better. In a UK Open Qualifier he beat Michael van Gerwen 6: 5. He reached the finals of the UK Open 2014, but failed in Round 2 to Ian White .
Gurney won the Irish Masters in the same year , which earned him a place in the preliminary round of the 2015 PDC World Championship . He was already 3-0 behind Scott Mackenzie , but turned the game around and prevailed 4-3. In round 1 he had to admit defeat to Ronnie Baxter 3-1.
In 2015 he made several semi-finals on the Pro Tour. This secured him a place at the Players Championship Finals 2015 . This tournament should give Gurney's career a big boost. In the first round he met Kim Huybrechts , whom he easily beat 6: 2. Gary Anderson waited in the round of 16 . Gurney was considered a blatant outsider, but clearly prevailed with 10: 4. He also survived the quarter-finals without any problems with a 10-5 win over Benito van de Pas . Thus he reached his first PDC major semi-final, which he contested against the number 1 in the world , Michael van Gerwen . After the score was 2-2, Gurney won no more legs and lost 11-2 without a chance.
His good year 2015 brought him a starting place for the PDC World Championship 2016 . Gurney defeated Jamie Lewis there in round 1 and in the second round, as before at the Players Championship Finals, meets the reigning world champion Gary Anderson . Gurney failed at the eventual world champion with 1: 4 sets.
After a successful 2016 , Gurney was also qualified for the PDC World Championship 2017 . After defeating the Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena 3: 1 in the first round , Robert Thornton from Scotland waited in round 2 , in which Gurney was the favorite despite his significantly lower ranking in the PDC Order of Merit . After winning the first seven legs, Thornton made a comeback to equalize 2-2 in sets. In a contested game, the man from Northern Ireland finally won 4: 3. In the last sixteen he met the Welshman Mark Webster , with Gurney appearing as the winner with a 3-1 lead. However, in a short phase he missed the "doubles" several times, so that victory was in danger. As the audience cheered every further mistake, Gurney responded with scornful applause in the direction of the audience. This ensured that the audience took the side of their opponent, which he could use to make it 3: 3. In the decisive set, however, Gurney succeeded in winning, so that he was able to qualify for a quarter-finals at the PDC for the first time. In this Gurney then met the number 1 in the world rankings, the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen . After equalizing to 1: 1 in the sets, Gurney was unable to win any more set and he lost 1: 5. He finished the Premier League Darts 2018 in fifth place in his premier season. In November 2018 he won his second big title when he beat Michael van Gerwen in the final of the Players Championship Finals with 11: 9 legs .
