Mark Webster (born August 12, 1983 in St Asaph , Denbighshire ) is a left-handed Welsh darts player . His nickname is Spider and his run-in music is The Bartender And The Thief by Stereophonics .

Career

BDO: 2007 to 2009

A sponsorship contract with Winmau enabled him to start his professional career at BDO in 2007 . The then 24-year-old Mark Webster was considered one of the greatest talents within the BDO. He underlined this early on by winning the WDF Europe Cup . He made his breakthrough in 2008. In January of this year he became world champion of the BDO against the Australian Simon Whitlock with a 7-5 victory.

PDC: 2009 to date

2009–2010 (beginnings in the PDC)

In February 2009 he switched to the rival association PDC . At first, Webster struggled to attract attention. With the PDC World Championship 2010 this should change by reaching the semi-finals, which he lost 6-0 against Phil Taylor . In the game for third place, Webster was able to prevail with 10: 8 in legs against Raymond van Barneveld .

2011 (jump into the top 10 in the world)

The year started very well for Webster, because at the PDC World Darts Championship 2011 he surprisingly defeated Taylor in the quarterfinals with 5: 2. He lost the semifinals 6: 4 against Adrian Lewis , who later won the World Cup. Webster made it into the top 16 of the PDC Order of Merit and received an invitation to the Premier League Darts 2011 . However, he finished the Premier League in last place. At the UK Open 2011 he reached the semi-finals after winning over Co Stompé and Robert Thornton , among others . He met James Wade there and was already leading 9: 7, but Wade turned the game around and moved into the final with a 10: 9 win. The year went better and better for him, at both the World Matchplay 2011 and the World Grand Prix 2011 , Webster made it to the quarter-finals. In November 2011, the Players Championship Finals took place, which are considered the dress rehearsal for the World Cup. After winning over Steve Beaton , Justin Pipe , Dave Chisnall and Wes Newton , Webster reached his first PDC Major Final. However, he lost this against Kevin Painter 13: 9.

After that, Webster was ranked 6th in the PDC Order of Merit and went into the PDC World Championship 2012 as a secret favorite .

2012–2014 (The Time of Crisis)

Webster met his fellow Welsh fellow, Richie Burnett, in the first round of the 2012 World Cup . The game was relatively weak and Webster surprisingly lost 3-2. This was followed by a mediocre year 2012. His best major result was a place in the round of 16 of the 2012 World Matchplay . In addition, he was no longer invited to the Premier League Darts . The 2013 World Cup followed . Webster entered the tournament in 10th place and won his first round match 3-1 against Ian White . This was followed by a disappointing 4-2 defeat by Colin Lloyd . 2013 marked a sporting low point for Webster. He did not achieve any notable successes and thus he fell from rank 10 to rank 26 in the PDC Order of Merit .

At the PDC World Championship in 2014 , Webster was expected to leave early, but surprisingly he found his form from 2010 and 2011 again. After victories over Mensur Suljović , John Henderson and Raymond van Barneveld , Webster was surprisingly in the quarter-finals. There he performed well, but was eliminated 5-3 against the eventual winner, Michael van Gerwen . The good result saved Webster from falling out of the top 32 in the world rankings.

However, 2014 should be another weak year. At the UK Open 2014 he reached the round of 16, but lost to Michael van Gerwen 9: 4 without a chance . It was his only participation in a major tournament in the whole of 2014. After that he was ranked 31st in the PDC World Championship 2015 . In the first round he defeated Ron Meulenkamp (3-1), but lost his second round game 4-0 against Phil Taylor .

2015-2016 (recurring successes)

Webster experienced personal happiness in 2015 when he became a father for the first time; he and his wife had a daughter named Ella. Webster himself said that this luck helped him to regain his old form after falling from 6th to 31st in the world rankings within 18 months.

In the first UK Open Qualifier of the year, Webster reached a semi-finals for the first time in three years. He beat Michael van Gerwen 6: 5 there. He managed to qualify for the UK Open 2015 , but was eliminated there in round 3 against William O'Connor . Webster's poor performance in recent years again led him to miss the World Matchplay . However, he did qualify for the 2015 World Grand Prix . He started as an absolute underdog, but surprisingly won round 1 against Stephen Bunting (2-1). This was followed by further victories over Adrian Lewis (3: 0) and Jelle Klaasen (3: 2). Thus, for the first time since 2011, he was in a major semi-final. There he was finally defeated by Michael van Gerwen 4-1. Webster dedicated this success to his daughter Ella.

This was followed by the 2015 Grand Slam of Darts , where he survived the group phase and thus made it to the round of 16. He showed an outstanding performance there. With a double quota of over 70%, he defeated the reigning world champion, Gary Anderson , with 10: 6. In the quarterfinals he was defeated by Raymond van Barneveld 16:12. He then won a qualifying tournament for the World Series of Darts Finals , which were held for the first time in 2015. Webster played against Michael Smith in the first round and won 6-4. In the last sixteen he failed again clearly 6-1 to Raymond van Barneveld.

His good performance in 2015 brought him back to 22nd place in the world rankings. At the PDC World Championship 2016 he met Mick McGowan in the 1st round , whom he clearly beat 3-0. On December 28, 2015, he met Terry Jenkins in the 2nd round . He defeated this clearly 4-0.
