The World Grand Prix is one of the major tournaments in darts. It has been organized annually by the Professional Darts Corporation since 1998 . The venue has been the Citywest Hotel in Dublin since 2001 - with an interruption in 2020 .

Previously, the Casino Rooms in Rochester, Kent (in 1998 and 1999) and the Crosbie Cedars Hotel in County Wexford (in 2000) hosted the World Grand Prix.

The current title holder is the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen , who won the final against the Englishman Dave Chisnall with 5: 2 sets in October 2019 .

format

The tournament has been played in the knockout system since 2000 . This was also the case in 1998. In 1999 a group stage was played before the knockout system. In 2000 there was also a preliminary round before the final round. The tournament usually lasts around a calendar week.

Each leg is played in 501 double-in-double-out mode. This means that the respective player can only score points in each leg if he hits a double field and can only win the leg if he brings his 501 points with a double field to exactly 0 points.

In the first edition of the tournament, the tournament was played in the best of legs game mode . Since 1999 it has been consistently held in the best of sets mode.

Prize money

The prize money earned in the tournament is taken into account when calculating the Order of Merit .

It increased continuously over the years and was distributed among the participants from the round of 16 as follows:
