William James O'Connor (born July 15, 1986 in Limerick ) is an Irish darts player .

Career

O'Connor started playing darts in 2005. After playing at the World Masters at the BDO in 2009, he switched to the PDC in 2009 . There he reached the fourth round at the UK Open 2010 after victories over Stuart Monaghan , Mark Frost and Peter Wright , in which he had to admit defeat to James Wade 3: 9.

In 2017 O'Connor qualified for the World Professional Darts Championship for the first time . In the 25th edition of the PDC event, however, he did not get beyond the first round (1: 3 defeat against Steve Beaton ). In his second participation a year later , he was able to win victories at the world championship for the first time. In the first round he beat the Dutchman Yordi Meeuwisse 3-0 and managed to defeat James Wilson 3-2 in the second round . Only in the third round could he be stopped by the Englishman Ryan Searle with 1: 4.

In 2018 he made his first final at a PDC tournament at the European Darts Matchplay in Hamburg . After triumphing over Martin Atkins , Rob Cross , Kim Huybrechts , Mensur Suljović and Andy Boulton , O'Connor reached the final there, where he first had to admit defeat to world number one Michael van Gerwen .

O'Connor has also been part of the Irish team at the World Cup of Darts every year since it was first held , most recently together with Steve Lennon in 2019 , where after victories over Greece and the favorites from England, Austria and the Netherlands they could advance to the finals. There the Irish duo lost against the Scottish team, consisting of Gary Anderson and Peter Wright .
