Robert "Rob" Cross (born September 21, 1990 in Pembury ) is an English darts player . In 2018 he won the PDC World Championship .

Career

Cross worked as an electrician before starting to play darts professionally. He got his nickname "Voltage" because of his previous job. He is the father of three children. He and his wife are expecting their fourth child in August 2020.

2016 amateur career

Before his PDC career, Cross tried to qualify for the BDO World Darts Championship 2016 , but failed. He also took part in the BDO World Masters 2015, the oldest major tournament still to be held, but he already failed to Darius Labanauskas in the round of the last 48. Cross began his PDC career as an amateur qualifier at the UK Open 2016 . After he had beaten Wes Newton and Jeffrey de Graaf , among others , he was eliminated in the fourth round against Michael van Gerwen with 9: 5. This confirmed his decision to become a professional, as he could keep up with the big ones, but since Cross did not have a tour card for the PDC Pro Tour at that time, he had to complete the tournaments of the PDC Challenge Tour . He won three of these events and thus earned a tour card for the next two years.

2017 start of professional career

In March 2017 Cross qualified again for the UK Open . In his first participation as a professional, he reached the round of 16, in which he was defeated by the eventual winner Peter Wright 6:10. One week later his greatest success followed: As part of the PDC Pro Tour 2017 , he took part in the 3rd Players Championship event. After victories against u. a. Raymond van Barneveld and Gerwyn Price he defeated Mervyn King 6: 5 in the final and won the tournament. As a result, Cross secured his first participation in some European Tour events . He reached the quarter-finals at the German Darts Open 2017 and the European Darts Grand Prix 2017 . At the 12th Players Championship event of the year, he won his second tournament victory on the Pro Tour after beating Ian White 6: 5 .

Due to his good performance on the Pro Tour , he qualified for the 2017 World Matchplay via the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit and reached the round of 16, which he lost 11: 8 to Adrian Lewis . At the beginning of September he lost 3: 6 to Michael van Gerwen in the final of the German Darts Grand Prix 2017 . At the end of September at the 19th Players Championship Event he won the final against Peter Wright 6-2. By winning the 21st Players Championship Event, Cross won his fourth tournament in his debut year as a professional. At the European Darts Championship 2017 he was seeded in sixth position and played his way to the final, which he lost 7:11 to world champion Michael van Gerwen. By making it to the finals, he secured prize money of £ 40,000 and eligibility for the 2017 Grand Slam of Darts . There he reached the quarter-finals, in which he failed again with 13:16 to van Gerwen. The following weekend he reached the semi-finals of the Players Championship Finals 2017, placed first .

World title 2018 and Premier League

Due to his strong performances in 2017, Cross played 20th in the PDC Order of Merit until the World Cup . After winning against Seigo Asada , Michael Smith , John Henderson and Dimitri Van den Bergh , he was in the PDC World Darts Championship 2018 debut after a 6: 5 victory in sudden death against defending champion van Gerwen in the final against Phil Taylor , which he won 7-2 on January 1, 2018. With this world championship title and his world ranking position 3 as a result, Cross received an invitation to the Premier League Darts 2018 from the PDC . At the first major tournament after the World Cup, The Masters 2018 , Cross reached the quarterfinals, where he lost 8:10 to Mensur Suljović . At the so-called "FA Cup of Darts", the UK Open 2018 , Cross lost his quarter-final match against eventual winner Gary Anderson with 5:10 in his third participation . In the Premier League Darts 2018 he lost his first two games against Michael van Gerwen 7-2 and against Simon Whitlock 7-1. Then Cross recovered from his form low and qualified early on matchday 14 for the playoffs at The O2 Arena in London . In these he lost in the semi-finals 10: 6 against Michael van Gerwen. On August 19, Cross won the first time in his career a tournament in the World Series of Darts , the Brisbane Darts Masters .

Apart from the World Cup, he could not build on his strong year 2017 with 4 tournament wins, so he was eliminated from the Grand Slam of Darts in the round of 16, the World Grand Prix and the Players Championship Finals even in the first round.

2019: Winning the World Matchplay and the European Darts Championship

At the PDC World Darts Championship 2019 he could not defend his title because he lost to Luke Humphries in the round of 16 . At the UK Open 2019 , Cross reached the final in his fourth participation, where he was defeated by the outsider Nathan Aspinall 5:11. In his second participation in the Premier League Darts , he reached the final this time, but was defeated by Michael van Gerwen .

At the World Matchplay 2019 he reached the semi-finals after victories over Chris Dobey , Krzysztov Ratajski and Stephen Bunting . His opponent there was Daryl Gurney . After Gurney only needed 2 legs to win at 15: 9, Cross began to catch up. He won the remaining 8 legs and reached the final with 15:17. There Michael Smith was his opponent, whom he defeated with 18:13. He won his first major major tournament since the 2018 World Cup and thus consolidated his 2nd place in the PDC Order of Merit . In addition, he was only the fourth player to win the World Cup and match play.

As part of the World Series he made it to the final of the Brisbane Darts Masters again , but there he was defeated by the hitherto largely unknown Damon Heta .

At the European Darts Championship 2019 in Göttingen he defeated Gerwyn Price 11: 6 legs and won his third major title.

At the Grand Slam of Darts 2019 , however, he could not continue this strong performance and lost in the round of 16 with 3:10 to Peter Wright .

At the PDC World Darts Championship 2020 he already lost in the second round against Kim Huybrechts with 0: 3.

Due to his strong year 2019 with two major titles, Cross qualified for the Premier League Darts 2020 via the PDC Order of Merit .

In the PDC Home Tour he reached the semi-finals.
