Gerwyn Price (born March 7, 1985 in Markham , Mid Glamorgan , Wales ) is a former Welsh rugby player and current darts player . His nickname is The Iceman ; his run-in music is Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice . He is currently number 1 in the PDC Order of Merit , where he replaced Michael van Gerwen after 7 years. In 2021 he won the PDC World Championship .
Career
rugby
Price played the Hakler position in the Welsh Premier Division for the Neath RFC and the Cross Keys RFC . He later ran on in the rugby league for the South Wales Scorpions . He was a substitute for the Glasgow Warriors playing internationally in Pro 14 . In 2014 he ended his rugby career because of a hand injury and concentrated on darts, which he had been doing in parallel since 2010.

2014
Price already played ambitious darts alongside his rugby career. Barrie Bates noticed him at a recreational tournament and advised him to try to become a professional. In January 2014 Price earned a two-year Tour Card at the PDC Qualifying School . He qualified for the UK Open 2014 . There he lost to Aden Kirk 2: 5 in round 2 .
He also achieved some successes on the Pro Tour. He reached several quarterfinals, beating players like Colin Lloyd , James Wade and Steve Beaton . Price narrowly missed qualifying for the 2014 World Grand Prix . But he managed to get a starting place for the PDC World Championship at the end of 2014. He met Peter Wright in the first round and lost 3-0.
2015
Price started the year as number 59 in the world . As in the previous year, he drew attention to himself on the Pro Tour. He reached some semi-finals and beat u. a. Adrian Lewis with an average of 105.78. His good performances earned him a starting place for the 2015 World Matchplay . In the first round he met Michael Smith as an outsider and defeated him with 10: 4. Adrian Lewis was his opponent in the round of 16. Price started strong, with an average of 110 points in the meantime he took a 7-2 lead and prevailed at 13:10. Thus he reached his first quarter-finals in a major tournament. There Peter Wright was his opponent, against whom he failed 16: 7.
2017
At the UK Open he surprisingly reached the final. On the way there he suggested u. a. Justin Pipe (10: 5), Ian White (10: 9) and Alan Norris (10: 9). In the final, however, he lost to Peter Wright 10: 6. At the World Cup of Darts he stood for Wales with Mark Webster against the Netherlands in another major final. In the further course of the year he reached the second round of a PDC major two more times at the World Grand Prix and the European Darts Championship .
2018
At the World Cup he made it to the round of 16 for the first time, but lost it to defending champion Michael van Gerwen . After the World Cup final, it was announced that Price would receive a wildcard for the Premier League . When he first participated in The Masters , he reached the quarter-finals. At the UK Open he could not build on his previous year's performance and did not get past the quarterfinals there either. He celebrated his greatest success so far on November 18, 2018 by winning the Grand Slam of Darts . In a heated final, he surprisingly beat Gary Anderson 16:13.
2019
2019 was a pretty successful year for Gerwyn Price. He took 5th place in the Premier League Darts and reached the semi-finals in the Champions League of Darts . Furthermore, he was in the final of the European Darts Championship , which he lost 6:11 against the Englishman Rob Cross and in the final of the Players Championship Finals , where he lost 9:11 to the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen . On November 17, 2019 Price was able to win the Grand Slam of Darts again with 16: 6 against the Scot Peter Wright .
2020
At the 2020 World Cup , he lost in the semifinals after a good preliminary round against a strong Peter Wright 3: 6. Price hit the headlines because he made a boxing gesture during the match and complained on social media about the behavior of future Scottish world champion Wright after the game . Later he apologized again. At the beginning of March he won the Belgian Darts Championship , where Price won 8: 3 against the Englishman Michael Smith . At the UK Open he lost to Michael van Gerwen in the final with 9:11. For the first time he won the World Grand Prix with 5: 2 against the Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode and the World Series of Darts Finals with 11: 9 against Rob Cross. Together with Jonny Clayton he won the World Cup of Darts . As in 2019, “The Iceman” finished 5th in the Premier League and narrowly missed the play-offs.
2021
On January 3rd he became the first Welshman to win the PDC World Championship against the Scottish Gary Anderson 7: 3. With this victory he became the tenth number 1 in the PDC world rankings since 1994.
