Barrie Bates (born October 17, 1969 in Merthyr Tydfil , Wales ) is a Welsh darts player . His nickname was "Champagne" and his theme song is House of Fun by Madness .

Career

Bates made his television debut at the 2003 UK Open and reached the third round there. In 2005 he reached the 5th round, but lost there with 10:11 legs against Lionel Sams and reached the final the following year, which he lost 7:13 against the Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld .

In 2006 he won two tournaments and reached two regional finals of the UK Open in March and November, both of which he lost (against Chris Mason and Raymond van Barneveld). He also reached two PDPA Players Championship Finals. In the first on the Isle of Wight, he lost to Colin Lloyd in June . The second in the Netherlands in November, however, he won against Phil Taylor and thus won his biggest title to date on the PDC tour.

He played his first world championship as number 17 on the seeding list at the PDC World Darts Championship 2007 . However, he lost in the first round to the Canadian Brian Cyr with 2: 3 sets. In 2008 he was able to survive the first two rounds (3-0 against Gerry Convery and 4-3 against Erwin Extercatte ), but then defeated in the round of 16 to the eventual finalist Kirk Shepherd with 2-4. At the 2009 World Cup , he first defeated the Northern Irishman Felix McBrearty (3: 0), the American Bill Davis (4: 2) and Mark Dudbridge (4: 0) to reach a quarter-finals at a PDC World Championship for the first time. In that, number 12 seeded Englishman Mervyn King beat him 5-2. However, the following years at world championships were less successful. At the 2010 World Cup , after he was able to celebrate a 3-1 win against Jelle Klaasen , he was eliminated 4-0 against Kevin McDine in the second round . Against the same player he lost 1: 3 in the first round of the PDC World Darts Championship 2011 . Due to a lack of success, he was unable to qualify for another World Cup in 2012 or 2013.

Because of his success in the tournaments that were not televised, in 2006 he won the "Best Floor Player" at the first PDC Awards Dinner . The title refers to the fact that in such tournaments many dartboards are played in a small hall.
