This world championship was organized by the PDC for the 16th time and held in the Alexandra Palace . The prize money of £ 740,000 and the winner's prize of £ 125,000 each set new records.
Number 1 seeded Englishman Phil Taylor won the tournament when he beat Raymond van Barneveld 7-1 in the final . With 110.94 points, “The Power” also set a new record for the highest cut per shot in a final. Defending champion was Canadian John Part , who was eliminated in the first round.

On January 2nd, 2009, Raymond van Barneveld threw the first " 9-Darter " in the history of the PDC World Professional Darts Championship when he won the quarter-finals against Jelle Klaasen and received a bonus of £ 20,000 .
In the match between Warren French and Akihiro Nagakawa in the preliminary round, both players achieved average shots of 54.95 and 54.34 respectively. Only Sir Eric Bristow (53.37) played worse at a PDC World Championship in the first round in 1999 when 0-3 against Peter Manley (90.18).
