The 1997 Red Ribbon World Darts Championship was dated December 29, 1996 to January 5, 1997 in the Circus Tavern in Purfleet , Essex discharged and was the fourth from the World Darts Council aligned (WDC, in summer 1997 in PDC renamed) World Cup . In the final, a new edition of the final meeting of the previous year, the Englishman Phil Taylor again defeated his compatriot Dennis Priestley 6: 3.
A total of £ 99,500 in prize money was awarded . The world champion received £ 45,000, the finalist £ 10,000, the semi-finalists £ 5,000 and £ 4,000 respectively and the quarter-finalists £ 3,000 each. The remaining participants were each entitled to £ 1,500 for second and £ 1,250 for third in the group stage. The highest finish was awarded £ 1,500.

Preliminary round
The six players with shared ranking positions played the three remaining places for the group stage in a preliminary round.
The participants were divided into eight groups of three players each. The first match (December 29) of a group was played by seeded player A and unseeded B, the second match (December 30) was played by the loser from match 1 and unseeded player C; the third match of all groups followed on January 1st. The group winners advanced to the quarter-finals, where the tournament continued in the cup system .
