Alexandra Palace in London, venue of the World Darts Championship

The 28th edition of the William Hill World Darts Championship 2021 was organized by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) from December 15, 2020 to January 3, 2021 . The venue was for the fourteenth time the Alexandra Palace (Ally Pally) in London .

Events in advance

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , there were discussions about the event in the run-up to the World Cup. The darts sport relevant for the rankings was suspended at the PDC on March 15, 2020. Only with the restart of the Super League Darts on May 16, 2020, a qualifying tournament for the World Cup was played again. The resumption of PDC game operations with the PDC Summer Series was July 8, 2020. In addition, a major tournament was held again from July 18, 2020 with the World Matchplay .

On November 23, 2020 the PDC published the dates and plans for the World Darts Championship on its website. Accordingly, the World Cup started on December 15, 2020 and, with the final on January 3, 2021, will be the first since 2017 whose final will not be played directly on New Year's Day. It has also been confirmed that the tournament will take place at Alexandra Palace in London . In addition, the PDC announced at the beginning of December that up to 1,000 viewers, exclusively from Great Britain, could attend the games per session. However, disguises and chants are prohibited. However, this option was suspended from December 16 because the British authorities in London had placed it in a higher risk category. With the exception of the first day of the match, all games took place without a spectator in Alexandra Palace.

Wayne Mardle's games were drawn on December 3, 2020 and scheduled the following day. After the Scot Gary Anderson had contact with a person who tested positive for the corona virus , his game was postponed from December 20th to December 23rd.

Tournament course

Paul Lim from Singapore was able to set a new age record in the first round , the 66 year old was able to win his opening game against Luke Humphries from England after falling 2-0 down . In the second round he finally failed at the reigning World Matchplay winner Dimitri Van den Bergh from Belgium, who played an average of 105.61 against Lim. In the last sixteen there was a duel with the Englishman Dave Chisnall . Here, too, Van den Bergh played an average of over 100 points, but Chisnall was in strong form and had meanwhile had a double quota of 75 percent and thus secured the quarter-finals.

In the same section of the tournament tree, the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen played his way into the quarter-finals with victories over Ryan Murray and Ricky Evans . Right at his start against Murray, he played the highest average in the World Cup (108.98 points). In the quarter-finals he met Joe Cullen from England . Cullen, who threw 19 times 180 points in the entire game, was already leading 3-1 sets before he awarded a match dart on the bullseye in the sixth set. Van Gerwen then equalized to 3: 3 in sets. In the seventh set, Cullen again awarded a match dart on the bullseye and finally lost 2: 3 in the seventh set.

In the duel between van Gerwen and Chisnall, one of the biggest surprises of the world championship occurred. Van Gerwen, who had not lost to Chisnall in 27 games, was eliminated from the tournament with 5-0 sets. Only Phil Taylor had previously managed to win over van Gerwen without losing a set .

In the second part of the upper half of the tournament, in the second round with Michael Smith and Rob Cross, the numbers 4 and 5 on the seeding list were eliminated from the world championship early on. Also for Adrian Lewis , who was placed at position 21, was after his defeat by the Americans Danny Baggish in round two circuits. History was made by Diogo Portela from Brazil, who was the first South American to ever win a game at a PDC World Championship.

The two-time world champion Gary Anderson , who defeated the Latvians Madars Razma in round two , then met Mensur Suljović from Austria. Again, Anderson emerged victorious, but the Scot criticized the Austrian's style of play in an interview after the game. As a result, former players like Wayne Mardle or Rod Harrington also got involved and criticized Anderson for his statements. Anderson was able to fight his way to the final, so he beat South African Devon Petersen in the second round and was able to take Dirk van Duijvenbode , who had previously defeated Glen Durrant and Rob Cross , out of the tournament in the quarterfinals .

In the first part of the lower half of the tournament there was a World Cup premiere after Nico Kurz's first round victory over Andy Hamilton . With Kurz and Gabriel Clemens, two German players met for the first time in World Cup history. Despite four high finishes, three of them in a row, from Kurz, Clemens emerged victorious from the game and met defending champion Peter Wright from Scotland in the third round . The Scot, who came on stage disguised as a Grinch on the first day of the World Cup , was left behind against Clemens and lost 4-3 sets. Clemes wrote darts history because he was the first German to reach a World Cup round of 16. The same applied to his opponent Krzysztof Ratajski , who was the first Pole to reach the round of 16. The two players played an even game and so there was a decisive leg in the last set. The Pole quickly played himself down to 56 points, while Clemens still had 287 points left, but was able to put pressure on Ratajski again with a 180. This awarded his first two match darts. But even Clemens could not use his chance with a hit on the double-16. As a result, both players awarded six match darts and both ended up with two points remaining. In the end, the Pole was able to hit the double 1 and move into the quarter-finals. There he met Stephen Bunting , against whom he was defeated by 3: 5 sets. In Bunting's third round game, James Wade managed a nine dart finish , the first at a world championship since 2016 .

In the last part of the tournament tree, Welshman Gerwyn Price, who was ranked third, qualified for the quarter-finals for the second time in a row with victories over his compatriot Jamie Lewis , Brendan Dolan from Northern Ireland and the Englishman Mervyn King . His opponent was the Northern Irishman Daryl Gurney , who was quickly 0-2 behind in sets. Gurney fought his way back and forced Price to a decisive leg in the last set. There the Northern Irish did not use his match darts and Price decided the game in his favor.

The first semi-final played Gerwyn Price and Stephen Bunting against each other. Right at the beginning, Bunting was able to play the first break with a 120 finish. Price was able to fight back with two legs in a row, but Bunting played another high finish in the fourth leg with 117 points. In the decider, however, Price was superior and secured the first set. Two more legs followed in favor of the Welshman, one of which he won with a 140 finish. Bunting, however, won this sentence. Sentence 3 also went to Bunting, who at that time had a checkout rate of 80 percent. Bunting was also superior at the beginning of the fourth set and checked 136 to make it 1-0. Price, however, equalized with a finish of 137. Bunting secured the two following legs again and took the lead 3-1. It was only in the fifth set that Bunting weakened on the double fields and Price equalized to 3: 3 in sets. In the seventh set, Price missed two match darts, which Bunting took advantage of with a finish of 118 points and took the lead again. But Price came back again and made it 4: 4 with a set average of 113.08 points. This was followed by the 5: 4 for Price, who finally won the last set and moved into the final. With this game, two new records were set at a world championship. On the one hand 13 finishes over 100 in a game and on the other hand 8 finishes over 100 by a player during an encounter.

Gary Anderson emerged as the winner of the second semi-final . He was able to secure the first sentence right at the beginning. In the second set, his opponent Dave Chisnall played a 170 finish and equalized in sets to make it 1-1 in the decider. The third set was again over the full distance, but this time it was Anderson who won the set. In the following sentence, too, the winner was Anderson. Chisnall then equalized to 2: 3. Again the decider was in the sixth set, in which both players missed double fields and the Scot was victorious again. Chisnall again reduced the game to 3: 4, but could not prevent Anderson's fifth appearance in the final.

In the final between Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson , the Scot was able to take the lead with 0-2 legs at the beginning, but lost the three following and with it the first set. Anderson did better in the second set and evened out in sentences. Price came back better from the break and won the first two legs, although Anderson checked out 170 points, but couldn't turn the set around. The Welshman also had the upper hand in the following two sets and took a 4-1 lead. His checkout rate at this point was 80 percent. The sixth set also went very well for Price, after checking 161, he narrowly missed double 12 for a nine dart finish . After another set win for Price, Anderson was able to 5-3 after Price had already given matchdarts in the eighth set. Price also showed nerves in the ninth set, but was crowned world champion after twelve match darts. He became the first Welsh world champion at the PDC.

mode

The tournament was played in the best of sets mode and the double-out variant .

The first player to win three legs won one set . The first player to throw exactly 501 points won a leg . The last throw of a leg had to be on a double field.

In contrast to the previous editions, the two-clear-legs rule did not apply when the score was 2: 2 legs in a decisive final set . The fifth leg was the decisive leg in this case.

Attendees

qualification

As in the previous year, 96 players took part in the World Cup. The field of participants consisted of the 32 best placed players of the PDC Order of Merit , the top 32 unqualified players of the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit and 32 international players of the World Championship International Qualifiers.

The seeded players (Top 32 of the PDC Order of Merit) only entered the tournament in the second round.

International Qualifiers

1 Martijn Kleermaker tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 before his first game and was therefore unable to compete. Josh Payne , the highest ranked player in the six final rounds of the qualifiers, was originally scheduled to replace . However, since Payne had contact with a person who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, he was also not allowed to compete. Because of these circumstances, the South African Cameron Carolissen received a bye .
2Originally, Kim Viljanen was the first of the PDC Nordic & Baltic Order of Merit to qualify for the world championships, but he had to cancel his participation for health reasons. His compatriot Marko Kantele moved up for him as third in the PDC Nordic & Baltic Order of Merit .

Prize money

At the 2021 World Cup, as in the previous two years, a total of £ 2,500,000 in prize money was distributed. For the first time in 20 years there was no additional prize money for a nine dart finish .
