The Ladbrokes .com World Darts Championship 2008 was held in London from December 17, 2007 to January 1, 2008 . This world championship was organized by the PDC for the 15th time and held for the first time in Alexandra Palace . In previous years the tournament had been held regularly at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet , Essex . The decision was made to move to London as this would more than triple the audience capacity for the event. The total prize money was £ 605,000 , of which £ 100,000 went to the winner.
Number 7 seeded Canadian John Part won the tournament when he defeated the previously relatively unknown Englishman Kirk Shepherd with 7-2 sets in the final . The defending champion was Raymond van Barneveld , who lost to Kevin Painter in the round of 16 .
