Seawaymax

The Eisenhower lock

Seawaymax is a size specification for ships . It refers to ships that can just barelypassthe locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway , the connection between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic . They are 225.6  m (740 ft ) long, 23.8 m (78 ft) wide, have a draft of 7.9 m and a height above the surface of the water of 35.5 m. This class is therefore smaller than the Panamax class.

There are some larger cargo ships on the Great Lakes that do not match the dimensions of the locks and are therefore limited to use on the Great Lakes. This size restriction naturally also limits the tonnage of the ships, the record of which is 28,500  t , while on the Great Lakes up to 72,000 t are reached. Even so, most new ships will be limited to the dimensions described here.

Ships larger than Seawaymax that are caught on the Great Lakes are referred to as ( real ) Lakers , Seawaymaxships sometimes as fake Lakers ; when they are seaworthy as salties .
