Aframax ( average freight rate assessment maximal ) are tankers with a load capacity between 80,000 and 119,000  dwt . The name is originally derived from an Average Freight Rate Assessment ( AFRA ) index and was introduced by Royal Dutch Shell in 1954 to standardize contractual terms.

These are mainly crude oil tankers, but also product tankers , which due to their size can supply most ports in the world. They supply regions that do not have very large ports or offshore terminals for very large oil tankers ( VLCC ). As a rule, they are powered by a diesel engine with 13,000-17,000  kW and can run around 15  kn . They are up to 245 meters long.
