Handysize
As Handysize (German as: "Handy size") are bulk carriers and more rarely tankers referred to in about a carrying capacity from 15000 to 35000 tonnes ( dwt have). They typically have a maximum draft of 10 meters , a maximum length of 190 meters and a width of around 28 meters. The specification used for the Baltic Exchange is: load capacity: 28,000 tons , draft: 9.78 m, 169 m length overall , 27 m width, four cranes of 30 t, five cargo holds of 37,523 m³ bulk goods or 35,762 m³ bales, maximum age of Ship: 15 years.
With 2000 registered units with a tonnage of 43 million, the majority of the bulk carriers on the world's oceans are Handysize. These ships are very flexible because their size allows them to call at smaller ports. In most cases they are equipped with cranes and can therefore pick up or unload their cargo even in ports without a corresponding superstructure .
Compared to larger bulk carriers, Handysize carriers transport a wider variety of types of cargo. These include steel products, grain, ores, phosphates, cement, logs, wood chips, and other general cargo . In comparison to larger bulk carriers, instead of "major-bulk" (ores and coal) they load "minor-bulk" cargoes.
Handysize bulk carriers are mainly built by shipyards in Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and India, although a few other countries have the capacity to build such ships. A conventional standard for a Handysize freighter is around 32,000 tons of payload. It has five holds with hydraulic hatch covers and four 30 tonne cranes. Sometimes these freighters also have vertical grab bars to load logs.
Even if a few new ships have been ordered recently, the ships with the highest average age are on the move in the Handysize sector.
