NOKmax

The high bridges limit the headroom, here the old Levensauer high bridge

NOKmax is a size specification for all ships passing the Kiel Canal (NOK). It is defined by the maximum dimensions that are permitted for the passage. The ships may not exceed a length of 235 meters, a width of 32.50 meters, a height of 40.00 meters and a draft of 9.50 meters. If the specified maximum dimensions are exhausted, the maximum permissible draft may only be 7.00 meters.

The maximum permitted ship dimensions are limited by the curve radii in the NOK, the width and draft of the canal bed and the clearance height of the bridges (each bridge has a clearance height of approx. 42 m) over the canal. In contrast to other canals, such as the Panama Canal (see also Panamax ), the locks are not a limiting factor.
