The size term Sammax refers to the group of the largest container ships currently in service on the South American east coast .

The size specification refers to container ships that can transport around 7500 standard containers ( TEU ) in the South American east coast. The first type of ship of this size is the Sammax class of the Danish shipping company AP Møller-Mærsk , which has been built at the South Korean Daewoo shipyard since 2011 . At the beginning of 2012, 10 of the 16 previously planned ships of this size were already in service. Compared to conventional Panamax ships with the same container capacity, the specialty of the Sammax ships is the particularly low maximum draft of just 11.90 meters and the greater width of just over 45 meters.
