A lock chamber of the Saimaa Canal

Saimax is a size specification for ships . It describes the largest ships that can just now pass the locks of the Saimaa Canal in Finland .

They are up to 82.5  m long, 12.6 m wide and have a maximum draft of 4.35 m in the canal passage. Usually the length and width dimensions are used to the maximum, while the maximum draft is usually even more than 4.35 m. That is why most freighters only have Saimax dimensions if their load-bearing capacity is not fully utilized and are, if possible, fully unloaded at sea, which means that they can temporarily no longer pass the canal.

In addition, the maximum height above the surface of the water must not be more than 24.5 m. These ships have a load capacity of approx. 2,000 to 3,500 tons and are usually reinforced for ice travel. Often the ships are loaded with wood or peat.

An example of typical modern Kümos of the Saimax class are the ships of the Bodewes Trader 3400 class .
