Size comparison with other maximum ship sizes

Chinamax is a size specification for ships . It describes a type of bulk carrier with the largest loading capacity, with which all relevant Chinese ports with bulk / ore loading can still be reached. The name is derived from the predominant use in China traffic.

Ships of this type are up to 360 meters long, up to 65 meters wide and, with a maximum draft of 24 meters, have a carrying capacity of around 388,000 tons. A Chinamax ore carrier is therefore a subspecies of the Very Large Ore Carrier category in terms of dimensions . In contrast to, for example, the Saimax , which is based on lock sizes, or the Suezmax ships, which are based on canal sizes , the size of the Chinamax is derived from the limits of the infrastructure of the ports in China.

So far, the mining group Vale has ordered 35 ships of this size from the DSME shipyards in South Korea and a Chinese shipyard. The Vale Brasil was the first to be delivered .
