With a loading capacity of around 400,000 t and a length of 362 m, the Valemax class ships are the largest bulk carriers in the world.

The first twelve ships were ordered from Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industries in 2008, seven more at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering followed in 2009. The first ship of the series was now considered Ore Brasil located in driving Vale Brasil . The 2009 ordered Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC) was November 15, 2010 at the shipyard of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea Okpo on laid keel , launched on New Year's Eve of that year, delivered 26 March 2011 and four days later put into service. The ore freighter is managed by the Anglo-Eastern Ship Management shipping company; the owner was initially the Brazilian mining group Vale (formerly CVRD). The ship initiated a construction program for a total of 35 Valemax ships. This series of VLOCs with load capacities between 388,000 and 400,000 tons is carried out at the two shipyards Daewoo in South Korea and Jiangsu Rongcheng Heavy Industrie in China as well as at two other shipyards in China and South Korea.
The Vale Brasil replaced the Berge Stahl as the previous size record holder and when it was unveiled in the Guanabara Bay of Rio de Janeiro in May 2011, it carried banners almost the size of a football field with the Portuguese inscription: “Vale Brasil o maior navio graneleiro do Mundo.” (German: “Vale Brasil the largest bulk carrier in the world ”) on the outsides.

The units of the Valemax class are designed as ore carriers with a deckhouse arranged aft, seven cargo holds and a bulk cargo hold of 221,057.6 m³. The seven hatches are closed by electro-hydraulically driven hatch covers that roll to the sides to open. The ballast capacity for return journeys without cargo is 232,802.8 m³. The individual ships differ, depending on the shipyard, due to minor differences in the size of the ship, the equipment with different engine models and other special features.
The ship's propulsion system consists of a two-stroke diesel engine manufactured under license. The engines are designed for operation with heavy fuel oil .
