The Ladbrokes World Darts Championship 2014 was hosted from December 13, 2013 to January 1, 2014 in its 21st edition by the Professional Darts Corporation . The venue was for the seventh time the Alexandra Palace in London , United Kingdom .

In the final the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen prevailed 7-4 against the Scot Peter Wright and won his first world title. He is the youngest world champion in the PDC World Darts Championship history and at the same time replaces Phil Taylor , the defending champion, who was eliminated in the second round against the Englishman Michael Smith , at the top of the PDC world rankings. The tournament was played in the set system, each set went over best of five legs.

Sport 1 broadcast the PDC World Darts Championship live on German television . The pay TV broadcaster Sport 1+ showed the games live and in full.

On the 2nd day of the World Cup, two nine darters were thrown. Terry Jenkins and Kyle Anderson each played the perfect game within an hour. Both players lost their game and were eliminated from the tournament. Terry Jenkins also managed the highest possible finish with 170 points, the first [...] of the World Cup. Even Wes Newton achieved the highest finish with twice Triple 20 and bulls eye in the spectacular first quarter-final on the 13th day of the tournament against Peter Wright . However, he also lost the argument and was eliminated from the tournament.

180 points were thrown 602 times. This is a new PDC World Darts Championship record.

Prize money

A total of £ 1,080,000 in prize money was awarded. The prize money for the winner has been increased from £ 200,000 to £ 250,000 for that year. This is the highest prize money in the history of this sport.

Tournament schedule

Of the 72 participants, 16 compete in a knockout round (preliminary round). The eight winners then complete the main field of 64 players, which also compete against each other in the knockout system according to the seeding list.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round matches were drawn on November 30, 2013. The preliminary round was played in the best-of-seven leg format. The winners of the preliminary round played on the same day of their encounter in the 1st round of the main round.
