Andy Smith (born June 22, 1967 in Bromsgrove , England ) is an English darts player who is currently under contract with the PDC . His nickname is The Pieman , which goes back to his training as a baker, and he uses Eat it by Weird Al Yankovic as run-in music.

Career

Smith had his greatest successes to date at so-called "floor events" (non-televised tournaments with many dartboards). Of these he was able to win five.

At the BDO he won the England Open, the Welsh Open and the Norway Open. He then switched to the PDC . His victories at the Scottish and South-West Regional Finals qualified him to participate in the UK Open 2005, and later he qualified for the Las Vegas Desert Classic, but he was eliminated in the first round.

For the PDC World Championship 2006 Smith could not qualify directly because he did not get a place as 33rd in the world rankings. However, he was still allowed to participate through the PDPA tournaments. After victories over Colin Monk (3: 0) and Ray Carver (4: 3) he reached the round of 16, but lost there 2: 4 against Alan Warriner-Little .

Until October 2007, Smith could not get any more tournament wins in the Pro Tour when he won the PDPA Scottish Players Championship in Irvine against James Wade . He also won the Players Championship in Dinslaken in June 2009. He threw a nine-darter in the quarterfinals and defeated Colin Lloyd in the final .

At the PDC World Championships in 2008 , 2009 and 2010 Smith lost three times in the first round after he was defeated Andy Jenkins 2: 4 in the second round in 2007 . In 2008 he was defeated by Mensur Suljović , in 2009 by Tony Ayres and in 2010 by Darin Young . It was not until 2011 that he was able to get past the first round again when he initially defeated Shane Tichowitsch 3-1 and Andy Hamilton 4-3 . In the second round, however, he was defeated by the eventual finalist Gary Anderson 4-0.

In June 2011 he won the Bobby Bourn Memorial Players Championship 6-2 legs against Dave Chisnall . He previously defeated Wayne Atwood 6-5, James Richardson 6-5, Alan Tabern 6-3 and Andy Hamilton 6-2. In the quarterfinals he knocked out Gary Anderson 6-1, and in the semifinals he beat James Wade 6-3 . In the final, he threw two twelve and two thirteen darts.

At the 2012 World Cup, he lost again in the first round, this time against Scott Rand 3-0, and couldn't win a single leg. The 2013 World Cup was similarly unsuccessful when he again lost 3-1 to Northern Irishman Daryl Gurney in the first round .
