content

Guy Delisle accompanies his wife Nadége, who works for Doctors Without Borders , to Burma. Their son Louis is also there. Delisle initially spends most of his time raising children, later he finds more time to observe and draw his surroundings. In short episodes, he tells of the experiences of a young father, the encounters with the foreign culture and the adversities in the military dictatorship.

publication

The comic was published by Delcourt in France in 2007 . This was followed by a German translation by Kai Wilksen in May 2009 for Reprodukt and an English translation for Drawn and Quarterly .

reception

Reviews praise the minimalist presentation, which clearly shows a subjective view of what has been experienced. Without looking for confrontation, the experiences in a military dictatorship are described. Despite irony and curious stories, the serious background becomes clear. The Süddeutsche Zeitung writes of a “poetic irony” . The daily newspaper sums up Delisle's narrative style to “the sensitive self and the wide, beautiful, terrible world” .
