Shenzhen is a graphic novel about a stay in China, written and drawn by the Canadian Guy Delisle . It first appeared in France in 2000 and has been translated into several languages.

content

The illustrator and animator Guy Delisle tells of his everyday life in the Chinese city and special economic zone of Shenzhen like a diary . He was transferred there for three months in December 1997 for the Dupuis animation studio to coordinate and control the work of the studio commissioned there on the series Papyrus . During this time he is confronted with everyday Chinese life, cultural differences and communication problems that are unfamiliar to him.

Publications

In 2000, the French publisher L'Association brought out the comic in France. In June 2006 the German translation by Jochen Schmidt was published by Reprodukt . Drawn and Quarterly published an English translation.

reception

In the reviews of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the comic is described as successful, with drawings that give ugly things “a very special beauty” or appear “carefree and self-deprecating”. But the strangeness and loneliness that the author was confronted with in China are always clear. The portrayal of the foreign culture is sometimes perceived as unstereotypical, sometimes as influenced by the western perspective. According to Christian Gasser, Delisle restricts himself to observation and recording and leaves the evaluation to the reader.
