Tony Ayres

Tony Ayres (born July 16, 1961 in Macau , China ) is an Australian screenwriter and film director .

Life

Ayres was born in Macau , China. His single Chinese mother, a nightclub singer, moved to Perth , Western Australia after he was born and died by suicide in 1972 when Ayres was 11 years old. Three years later, his stepfather died of a heart attack. Ayres and his sister were then brought up by their then history teacher. He later moved to Canberra . The film The Home Song Stories is based on the childhood experiences of Ayres.

Ayres studied photography and journalism at the Australian National University in Canberra and then film and video at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne , Victoria . After graduating, he worked as a screenwriter and film director in Australia .
