Opperode is a village in the city of Ballenstedt in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

Opperode is east of Ballenstedt on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains . The place has 456 inhabitants (as of 2009). The total area of ​​the district is 2.51 km². The population density is therefore 181.7 inhabitants per km². The actual built-up area is 0.16 km². The village pond Opperode is located in the village . The Stahlsberg is located south of Opperode .

history

Opperode gained a certain regional importance as a coal mining area and the only coal mining area of Anhalt-Bernburg . The coal mining probably began in the early 16th century. In 1573, permission was given to build a new shaft. From 1740 to 1824 there was intensive coal mining. The coal was mainly supplied to the copper smelters in the Mansfeld region and the salt works in Staßfurt . From 1852 to 1860 attempts were made to mine coal again. In 1869 the coal mining in Opperode was finally stopped.

In 1933 505 people lived in the village, in 1939 the number had risen to 535 inhabitants. Until June 30, 1950 Opperode was an independent municipality and was then incorporated into Ballenstedt.

Buildings

Worth mentioning is the Opperode manor with buildings from the 18th century. The Protestant St. Peter Church dates from 1891 . The Bismarck Tower , built from 1914 on, is located on the Stahlsberg .
