The World Matchplay 2018 is a major tournament in darts and was organized by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) for the 25th time in 2018. It was held at Blackpool's Winter Gardens from July 21-29, 2018 . The winner received the Phil Taylor Trophy for the first time .

The tournament was won by the Scot Gary Anderson , who prevailed in the final in overtime with 21:19 legs against the Austrian Mensur Suljović . Anderson won the World Matchplay for the first time in his career. He also threw in the fourth leg of his quarter-final game against England's Joe Cullen a nine-o'clock and secured an additional prize money of 45,000 pounds.

format

In the tournament with a total of 32 participants, which was carried out in the knockout system , each game was played in legs. Ten legs had to be won in the first round. The number of legs to be won per round increased up to the final, and up to 18 legs were then played in the final. The important thing was that the game had to be won by two legs.

Until 2012, the World Matchplay differed from other darts tournaments in that no decision leg was scheduled. Instead, the game was played until a player was able to play a two-leg lead. This regulation was changed in 2013. The number of extra legs in which a player can bring about a decision by two legs has since been limited to five. Then a decision leg is played, if necessary, which corresponds to a sudden death .

The 500,000 pounds in prize money, which were played at the World Matchplay, distributed as follows among the 32 participants:
