history

In 1875 the Winter Gardens Company bought the property for around £ 28,000. On July 11, 1878, the Winter Gardens were officially opened. The original plan was "to build a concert hall, promenades, winter gardens and other accessories on the property to convert the property into a cozy complex."

In the 1870s the vestibule, the arcade and the pavilion theater were built. The Opera House Theater followed in 1889. The Empress Ballroom was built in 1896 together with the Indian Lounge (arena). The old Blackpool Ferris wheel was also on the premises.

After the Tower Company took over the building in 1928, the Olympia was built in 1930. The following year the Galleon Bar, the Spanish Hall and the Baronial Hall were added. The opera house was rebuilt in 1939.

In 1967 the EMI Group took over the complex before the building was bought by First Leisure in 1983. Then in 1998 Leisure Parcs acquired Winter Gardens from First Leisure for an estimated £ 74 million. The deal also included the Blackpool Tower and the three landing stages (Central Pier, South Pier, North Pier). On December 3, 2009, it was announced that Leisure Parcs had accepted a £ 40 million offer from Blackpool Council to sell the Winter Gardens as well as the Tower and other buildings on the site.
