The European Darts Championship is a major tournament in darts and was held for the ninth time in 2016 from October 28th to 30th by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The venue for the second time was the Ethias Arena in Hasselt .

Defending champion Michael van Gerwen was able to successfully defend the title he had won last year with an 11-1 win in legs in the final against Mensur Suljović . It was his third title at this tournament.

format

In contrast to previous years, only the top 32 of the European Tour Order of Merit took part in the tournament; there was no more participation for the top eight of the PDC Order of Merit .

The tournament was played in legs using the knockout system . The number of legs to be won per round increased. Game mode in the 1st round was a best of 11 legs . By the finale, the mode rose to best of 21 legs . Each leg was played in 501 double-out mode.

Prize money

Compared to last year, the prize money has increased by £ 100,000 to a total of £ 400,000. The prize money was distributed among the participants as follows:

Trivia

  • The former winner of the European Darts Championship, Adrian Lewis , could not qualify for the final tournament; he only took part in three of the ten events this year.

transmission

The broadcasters Sport1 and Sport1 + broadcast the event in German-speaking countries . The stations could also be received in Austria via cable and satellite.

Internationally, all games were also broadcast directly by the PDC on livepdc.tv.
