Mark McGeeney (born June 28, 1972 in Wyken , England ) is an English darts player who is currently under contract with the BDO and occupies second place on the BDO Invitation Table .

Career

Career at BDO

McGeeney began playing in BDO tournaments in 2010 . Already in August of the same year he managed to win the Weoley Castle Open by defeating Kevin Taylor. In September 2014, the Englishman celebrated another success by winning the England Classic, where he defeated Wesley Harms in the final. By defeating former world champion Scott Waites in the final of the British Open 2015, McGeeney was able to celebrate another success.

In 2016 , McGeeney took part in a BDO Darts World Championship for the first time, where he had to surrender to the favored Scott Mitchell in the round of 16 after defeating Sweden's Peter Sajwani in the first round. In the further course of the year, the Briton was able to establish himself in the expanded world elite of the BDO, so that he reached the final of the World Masters 2016. Only in the final McGeeney had to admit defeat to world number one Glen Durrant after victories over Scott Waites in the second round and Scott Mitchell in the semifinals . At the BDO World Darts Championship 2017, however, it was Waites who eliminated McGeeney from the tournament in the round of 16. In September 2017 McGeeney reached the final of the World Masters again, but clearly lost with 1: 6 sets against Krzysztof Ratajski . Because of his strong performances in 2017, McGeeney was qualified for the Grand Slam of Darts via the BDO Invitation Table. However, the Englishman retired without a win against Mensur Suljovic , Michael Smith and James Wilson on his first participation.

In 2018 McGeeney made it past the round of 16 of a world championship for the first time and reached the final of the BDO World Darts Championship by beating the German Michael Unterbuchner in 6: 4 sets . He lost this 6: 7 against the favorite Durrant. At the World Masters he then surprisingly failed in the round of 16 against eventual tournament winner Adam Smith-Neale . Nevertheless, later in the year McGeeney succeeded in ousting long-time number one on the BDO Invitation Table , Glen Durrant, from the top of the world rankings. Nonetheless, McGeeney did not get beyond the group stage in his second participation in the Grand Slam of Darts . The BDO World Darts Championship 2019 ended surprisingly for the number one seeded player in the round of 16 after a 4-0 defeat by Conan Whitehead .

Career with the PDC

As the winner of a so-called Speedy qualifier , McGeeney reached the preliminary round of the UK Open 2013 , where he lost to Scott Coleman with 0: 5 legs. After the Briton then concentrated on his BDO career, he is considering taking part in the PDC's UK Q-School in Great Britain in January in order to secure eligibility for tournaments of the PDC Pro Tour 2019 . In case of failure, the dart player would return to the BDO. On January 15, 2019, the PDC confirmed that McGeeney had registered for the Q-School and that he will take part in four tournaments of this series in the United Kingdom. On the second day of Q-School 2019, he managed to secure a 2-year Tourcard with a 5-4 final win over Carl Wilkinson.
