Conan Ross Whitehead (born February 18, 1986 in Gillingham ) is an English dart player for the British Darts Organization who competes in tournaments under the nickname "The Barbarian".

Career

Career start at BDO

Whitehead began his career with the BDO and took part in his first professional darts tournament in August 2007 with the Belgium Open , where he finished in the round of 32. A year and a half later, the Englishman secured his first tournament win at the Kent Open , for which he received his first major prize money of £ 1,500. His attempt to qualify for the BDO World Darts Championship 2010 via a qualifying tournament failed in September 2009 in the preliminary round of the qualifier. His first participation in the World Masters in the same year brought him into the round of 72. This was followed in the course of 2010 by smaller tournaments such as the Turkish Open or the Antwerp Open , in which Whitehead participated, but which he was eliminated early in the tournament.

Change to PDC

In 2011 Whitehead moved from the BDO to the PDC , where he took part in the UK Open in his first year . Here the Englishman reached the 2nd round, in which he received a 2: 4 defeat against Welsh Wayne Atwood . In another participation in the UK Open in the year, for which he was entitled to participate as the winner of a Speedy qualifier , he beat Roland Scholten in the first round , but ultimately failed in the round of the last 64 to Mickey Mansell with 8: 9 legs . At the beginning of the year Whitehead successfully took part in four tournaments of the UK competition of the PDC Qualifying School, so that he received a two-year tour card for the PDC Pro Tour . He took part in the Players Championship several times , but was never able to play his way through to the top rounds. In 2014 he also qualified for the UK Open for the last time , but lost his first round game. Whitehead's participation in tournaments in the Players Championship series in 2015 also ended in the earlier rounds.

Return to the BDO

After he could not play his way into the top places in the PDC Order of Merit and did not take part in Q-School again , Whitehead switched back to the BDO at the beginning of 2016 . At the England Open in June Whitehead reached a final for the first time in a long time, but lost it to Glen Durrant . In addition, he shared third place at the French Open in the same year, which prompted the BDO to invite him to the Finder Darts Masters , where he did not get beyond the group stage. Whitehead's first participation in the 2017 BDO World Darts Championship followed . The Englishman was defeated in the first round by the Lithuanian Darius Labanauskas with 1: 3. At the BDO World Trophy , Whitehead was able to return the favor to Labanauskas by beating him 6: 5 legs and moving into the quarter-finals, where he was narrowly defeated 6: 7 to Martin Phillips . The Briton was actually not qualified for the tournament, but was still allowed to participate, as two actually qualified players had to cancel their participation. After the Finder Darts Masters for Whitehead once again ended after the group stage, he made it into the round of 16 for the first time at the 2018 BDO World Championship after defeating the seeded Scotsman Cameron Menzies with 1: 3 sets. The Englishman then lost his round of 16 against Jim Williams . Whitehead performed surprisingly poorly in 2018 at the BDO World Trophy and the World Masters . However, the dart player came out of the group stage for the first time at the Finder Masters in December 2018 and reached the quarter-finals, which he lost to the tournament winner Durrant. At the following World Cup , he defeated world number one Mark McGeeney in the last sixteen and reached his best World Cup result to date by making it to the quarter-finals. Here, however, he was defeated by ex-world champion Scott Waites with 3: 5 sets. In January 2019, Whitehead will take part in the UK Q-School of the PDC for the first time in several years . If he wins a Tour Card , Whitehead can take part in the PDC Pro Tour 2019 , otherwise the dart player would remain with the BDO.
