Career

Amateur area

Michael Unterbuchner has been playing darts since 2004 and joined the DC Black Birds Kehlheim in 2015 , with which he won the German championship in 2016. He is still active for this association today (as of June 2020). After winning the German team championship, Unterbuchner reached the top of the rankings of the German Darts Association.

BDO / WDF

Unterbuchner qualified for the World Masters held in September 2017 , but failed in the first round with 2: 3 sets against Romanian Adrian Frim. In the run-up to the BDO World Darts Championship 2018 , the player from Kelheim also achieved good results in international darts tournaments such as the Italian Grand Masters, where he reached the final. As one of four out of 291 dart players, Unterbuchner was able to assert himself in a qualifying tournament in England and thus reached the World Cup. In the preliminary round of the world championship he then prevailed against the Canadian David Cameron and thus moved into the main draw of the tournament, where he was able to beat the world number three Jamie Hughes with 3-2 sets in the first round . Unterbuchner won the round of 16 with 4: 2 sets against veteran Martin Phillips, so that he met Richard Veenstra from the Netherlands in the quarter-finals , whom he also knocked out 5: 4 from the tournament. Unterbuchner is the first German who was able to reach the semi-finals in a darts world championship . By reaching the second round, he had already achieved the best ever World Cup result for a German dart player.

On June 3, 2018, he lost the final of the BDO World Trophy 2018 10: 7 against Glen Durrant . During the 2018 season he was the first German to reach number 1 in the WDF world rankings. At the BDO World Darts Championship 2019 , he repeated his previous year's success and lost to Scott Waites in the semifinals . After being able to play fewer tournaments in the 2019 season due to his professional situation, he only reached the round of 16 at the BDO World Darts Championship 2020 .

PDC

As one of the eight representatives of the BDO, Unterbuchner qualified for the Grand Slam of Darts 2018 . Here he got through victories over Ian White and Steve Hine in the group stage in the round of 16, where he prevailed 10: 6 against James Wade , before he lost 6:10 to Gary Anderson .

As early as December 2018, he announced that he would be moving to Professional Darts Corporation in 2020 . At the Q-School 2020 he reached the second round twice and thus missed winning a PDC Tourcard. After Martin Schindler and Robert Marijanović withdrew , Unterbuchner received a wild card for the Super League Darts 2020 , where he reached the semi-finals and was eliminated from Dragutin Horvat .
