As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor in rural areas, many families migrated to the cities in the second half of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).

economy

The two neighboring towns are predominantly agricultural (grain, fruit growing). Although there is a pilgrim hostel and several smaller hotels, pilgrimage tourism only plays a minor role.

history

Ciriñuela is first mentioned in writing under the name Cironia in 972 , a century later as Cirunnuela . In donation documents to Alfonso VII of Castile and later the Catholic Kings it is then called Ciriñuela. In Cirueña, the first count of Castile, Fernán González , was captured by Navarre troops in the 10th century . After its liberation, he granted the place extensive legal freedom in a fuero .

A written mention can be found on the occasion of the foundation of the monastery Santa María la Real de Nájera in 1052. García Sánchez III. of Navarre equipped the convent with lands, which also included Cirueña and its dependent communities. Due to violent conflicts, the village was almost completely depopulated in the 14th century. After the taxes were suspended for ten years, a large number of former residents returned to the village in 1387.

Cirueña belonged to the province of Burgos until the province of Logroño was founded in 1833, from which - after the end of the Franco era - the autonomous region of La Rioja emerged in 1980/82.
