O Cebreiro ( Spanish : El Cebrero ) is a small village on the Way of St. James in the east of the autonomous community of Galicia ( Spain ). Located in the province of Lugo , the place belongs to the municipality ( municipio ) Pedrafita do Cebreiro .

Geographical location

O Cebreiro is about 1300 meters above sea level. d. M. not far from the Cebreiro pass, a connection already used in antiquity between the plateaus ( mesetas ) of Castile-León and Galicia .

history

O Cebreiro has existed as a pilgrimage station since Alfonso II the Chaste founded a pilgrim hospital and a monastery here in 836 to look after it. At the same time it is important for the current pilgrimage: From here - the place of activity of the pastor Don Elías Valiña Sampedro - important impulses for the revitalization of the Camino de Santiago emanated.

Host miracle

It is famous for a host miracle that is said to have occurred here in 1300: a pious farmer comes up the mountain despite the storm to the holy mass, which is celebrated by a monk who doubts God . He secretly makes fun of the farmer. However, during the Eucharist , the bread and wine are actually changed into the flesh and blood of Christ, whereupon the monk is healed.

The “miracle of O Cebreiro” is an officially recognized host miracle by the Catholic Church - by Pope Innocent VIII (1484–1492) and Pope Alexander VI. (1492-1503). The Catholic Kings donated a rock crystal bottle for “flesh and blood”. The pilgrimage in honor of the miracle takes place on 8/9 September.

This “Galician Holy Grail” was included in the Galician coat of arms and is said to have been partly the inspiration for Richard Wagner's musical work ( Parsifal ).

Attractions

  • The Iglesia Santa Maria is the oldest pilgrimage church on the Way of St. James and was built together with the above-mentioned monastery. Its bell tower is special in that the bells are not hung inside, but - like in a bell gable - in the arched openings. Because of the storms, the church is set very deep in the rock (to the left of the entrance, the height of the window in the baptistery shows the height of the pre-Romanesque building). The church has three aisles and has right-angled apses . In the left apse there is a figure of Saint Benedict ; the central apse contains a Romanesque figure of the Virgin Mary of Santa Maria la Real from the 12th century, in front of which the grave of the doubting monk can be seen; the right apse contains the implements of the miracle. The baptismal font from the 9th century is an immersion font , as it was common until the 13th century.
  • The Pallozas are the elliptical huts of the Celtiberians . They are thatched, have no windows or chimneys (smoke vent through a thatched roof) and offer space for animals and people. One third was the stable and barn (hence the wide gate), two thirds represented the living area, which was shared by up to four generations. In the living area, only the bedroom for the oldest couple was separated; the babies and toddlers also slept there. A swiveling kettle hung from the ridge beam over the open hearth. The smoke must have been unpleasant to unbearable, but it sealed the rye thatched roof, smoked sausages and leather bottles and prevented mice and rats. One of the pallozas is set up as a museum and can be visited.

Miraculous image of O Cebreiro

The miraculous image of Santa Maria la Real or the Blessed Virgin of Cebreiro from the 12th century was restored in 1971 and is the destination of a pilgrimage every September 8th, in which up to 30,000 people have already participated.

Culinary specialties

At Cebreiro there is a traditional cream cheese called Queixo / Queso Cebreiro, which - combined with local honey - is considered a delicacy. The dish is called 'Queso con Miel' in Spanish.

Facilities for pilgrims

In O Cebreiro there is a year-round pilgrimage hostel, which is usually overcrowded in summer and is supplemented by tents. There is a pension next to the church. At least two restaurants are open all year round.
