Reliegos or Reliegos de las Matas is a place on the Camino de Santiago in the province of León in the autonomous community of Castile and León , administratively it is dependent on Santa Martas .

From a distance of 5.5 km from Mansilla de las Mulas , the saying arose that illustrates the length of the Castilian mile: La legua bien medida, de Reliegos a Mansilla. The local economy is based on fields and livestock farming (sheep, cattle, pigs) as well as beekeeping and pigeon keeping.

history

Former church and bodegas in Reliegos

A total of 118 archaeological finds were discovered in and around Reliegos. These included Neolithic stone axes and hand axes as well as Bronze Age ring axes. For the Roman period there is a roof tile with the inscription “ Legio VII ” (Seventh Legion, stationed in: León), a mill and tiles with the seal “Vallorno”.

Three Roman highways merged in Reliegos. The name of the nearby village Valdearcos, (Latin: Vallis-arcuum = valley of the arches) illustrates this, the reference point may have been a bridge in one of the streets. Ptolemy mentions “Pallantia” at the intersection of the roads from Tárraco ( Tarragona ) and Burdigala ( Bordeaux ) with the highway from the eastern Pyrenees to León, which is considered to be the nucleus of the later Reliegos. It is also mentioned as being located at 32 and 34 streets of the Itinerarium Antonini , published during the time of Emperor Diocletian .

The place was looted in 465, for the time of the Reconquista (here: 718-910) it is mentioned as an important settlement in the "Gothic Fields" (Campus Gothorum). After the Moorish invasion, the place is deserted, the fields turn into scrub and oak groves. Only the arrival of Mozarabs from the south of the Iberian Peninsula revived the area around the Río Esla .

There are numerous finds from the Middle Ages , the most important of which is a grave stele that is now in the University of León . In the library of the Real Monasterio de El Escorial there is an 8th century manuscript and in the Archaeological Museum of Tarragona there is an inscription mentioning a woman Liciana Flacilla from Pallantia.

In accordance with Roman law , which the Visigoths had adopted in the Codex Euricianus , ownerless goods (bona vacantia) fell to the state. During the repopulation of the area after the Reconquista, this “no man's land” was given to all who were willing to work and defend it. The offer was accepted and was accepted as a group. The head of the group prepared the distribution of the land, the allocation was made by lot . He will also have given the name, which is probably due to one of the Latin words “relinquo” (abandon, leave or leave behind) or “relego-is” (= regroup) or “relinquiae-arum” (relics, remains) .

From the 10th to the 17th century, Reliegos was the subject of numerous changes of ownership through purchase or donation. Evidence of this are mentions in various documents such as B. the will of the Leonese King Ordoño II. (León) or deeds of donation from Doña Urraca , Ferdinand I (León) or Ferdinand IV. (Castile) . The spelling of the place name shows a spectrum from Relligos to Reirigos , Reliegos de las Matas , Reliquos , Religos , San Cebrián de Reliegos up to the form in use today.

Reliegos was involved in the hiking pasture industry in the Middle Ages, as one of the most important routes passed by, the Cañada Real , more specifically the Cañada Real Leonesa Occidental, on which the merino sheep from Extremadura were driven to the cooler summer pastures of the north.

In 1808 the Napoleonic troops under Marshal Soult Reliegos passed before attacking Mansilla de las Mulas. On November 30, 1866, a new administrative structure worked out by Javier de Burgos came into force, as a result of which Reliegos became administratively dependent on Santas Martas.

On November 8, 1863, the section Palencia - León (122.835 km) of the Palencia - La Coruña railway was inaugurated, for the construction of which the Compañía del Noroeste had received the concession. The company - meanwhile further built to Ponferrada  - took over the Compañía A. G. L. (Ferrocarriles de Asturias, Galicia y León). She acquired 14 locomotives from Neilson ( England ), which were named after places in the area, one of which was called Reliegos. The number of locomotives increased to 63, the last machines from this time were in service until 1931.

On December 28, 1947 around 8:00 a.m., a meteorite hit the main street (Calle Real) without causing any damage. The troubled population found it buried 35 cm deep in the ground, not far from a farm vehicle and a house. It was a type L5 chondrite weighing 8.9 kg. The meteorite is the last one registered in Spain, it is exhibited in the National Science Museum (Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales) in Madrid .
