Bizkarreta-Gerendiain ( Spanish Viscarret ) is a small town in the municipality of Erro / Erroibar in the Basque- speaking part (Zona vascófona) of the autonomous community of Navarre .
The village lies on the Way of St. James and was an important place for the pilgrims in the Middle Ages . The Book of Jacob names Biscaretum in the 12th century as the first stage destination on Spanish soil and thus overlooked the just founded monastery of Roncesvalles . This part of the local history can only be traced in documents, there are no more traces of the hospice itself.
The church of San Pedro dates back to the 13th century and already has Gothic elements. At the beginning of the 20th century it underwent major renovations. It is interesting that the apse - as in the pre-Romanesque church architecture of this area - was laid out in a rectangular shape.
