history
The place name refers to three castles, of which no remains have been preserved. It was founded in the 9th century by Count Gatón del Bierzo . Aimeric Picaud mentions it in Jacob's book as well as Arnold von Harff and Domenico Laffi in their pilgrimage reports. The ninth stage ends here at Picaud, and he also refers to the tradition of carrying limestone from the nearby limestone quarry for the construction of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela to the kilns in Castañeda.
