Diocese

The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese Mondoñedo-Ferrol and has the important cathedral Virgen de la Asunción and a seminary . The original name of the diocese was Britonia and probably indicates an immigration of Celtic refugees from southern England, who fled from there in the 5th or 6th century from the Anglo-Saxon invaders. The diocese was probably founded by the Suebi king Theodemir , who converted to Catholicism .

Attractions

The city, the center of the village is classified as a conjunto histórico-artístico ,

The Romanesque cathedral dates from the 12th century and has baroque towers. Inside there is a statue of the Virgin Mary, Nuestra Señora la Inglesa , on the high altar , which was originally located in St Paul's Cathedral in London and was rescued here during the Reformation. The predecessor building of the cathedral from the 9th century, the Basilica of San Martiño de Mondoñedo, a little apart, has been preserved and now serves as a diocesan museum.

Not far from the city there is a cave system over 7000 m long, the Covas do Rei Cintolo .
