Monforte de Lemos is a Spanish city in the province of Lugo in the Galicia region , about 45 km northeast of Ourense . The city is located on the Cabe River , a tributary of the Sil .
Attractions
The small town, which has been populated almost completely since the Bronze Age, has a number of significant architectural monuments. These include the monastery of San Vicente do Pino with its cloister and classicist facade, the palace of the Counts of Lemos and the fortress Castelo de Monforte with its 14th century, 30 m high defense tower Torre da Homenaxe . This also includes the Colegio de Nuestra Señora la Antigua (also Colegio de la Compañía or Colegio del Cardenal ) of the Jesuit order , which was built in the so-called Herrera style . In addition to various works of art, it also contains two paintings by El Greco and a reredos by Francisco de Moure . Numerous important sacred objects ( monstrances , crucifixes , processional crosses, etc.) are also kept in the Santa Clara monastery . There are also sculptures there, including a Resting Christ, a work by Gregorio Hernández . In the monastery of San Jacinto you can hear one of the best organs in Galicia in the church. A Parador has been set up in the monastery building .
