history

The place has the layout of the street village typical for villages on the pilgrimage route, the only street was formerly called Camino Francés . Bravo Lozano assumes that it was a market town (burgo) belonging to Sahagún . The second part of the name is said to refer to the frogs (Rana: toad, frog) that settle in the surrounding lagunas. There is one written mention for the year 1126, another for 1138, when the abbess of Gradefes granted the place special rights .

Domenico Laffi describes the place and its inhabitants in his travelogues from 1673 and mentions Pallozas , traditional Celtiberian round houses, as they can still be seen in O Cebreiro today.

The parish church is dedicated to St. Peter . The Romanesque wooden statue of the Mother of God that once stood here is now on display in the Cathedral Museum in León .

Individual evidence

  1. Cifras oficiales de población resultantes de la revisión del Padrón municipal a 1 de enero . Population statistics from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (population update).
  2. These lagunas are temporary lakes in which meltwater and rainwater collect at the end of winter. Until they disappear in early summer, they represent an ideal breeding ground for frogs and thus an excellent hunting ground for storks.
