San Juan de Ortega Monastery

history

Initially built as a hospital and chapel in the early 12th century as the founding of St. John of Ortega , it was first mentioned in writing in 1138 in a document from Pope Innocent II , in which he placed the hermitage under his personal protection. The originally impassable area, inhabited by wild animals and feared because of bands of robbers, was made accessible to pilgrims at the instigation of the founding father. Today the monastery is no longer inhabited by monks; but it offers a pilgrim hostel .

Monastery church

The construction of the three-aisled monastery church began in 1150, the apses of which still have clear Romanesque features both inside and outside , whereas the nave with its pointed girdle arches and ribbed vaults already presents early Gothic elements. Renaissance elements are already visible on the portal and on the bell gable (espadaña) . The interior of the central apse shows serrated vault ribs on the sides ; The tiered design of the three central windows is almost unique .

Capitals

There are some notable capitals in the church, most notably the one with the three-part Christmas cycle. It shows the Annunciation by the Archangel Gabriel kneeling before the Virgin Mary . Maria can also be seen visiting her cousin Elizabeth. The birth of Christ and the proclamation among the shepherds in the field are also shown. Twice a year during the equinox , also nine months before the birth at the time of conception on March 21, this capital is illuminated by sun rays shortly before sunset.
