Juan de Quintanaortuño

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juan de Quintanaortuño , called Juan de Ortega , (* around 1080 in Quintanaortuño near Burgos , † June 2, 1163 in today's San Juan de Ortega ) was a Spanish bridge builder and saint. He was born in the small village of Quintanaortuño and raised in a monastery. After his ordination he went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Like his teacher Domingo García , now known as Santo Domingo, he devoted himself to the building of churches, hostels, paths and, above all, bridges, for example he renewed the bridge over the Ebro in Logroño .

From his hermitage in the Oca Mountains, the monastery of San Juan de Ortega became an important stop on the Camino de Santiago . Queen Isabella the Catholic commissioned a magnificent tomb for him in 1474. It is located in the monastery church there and is visited by married people who want a son.

Juan de Ortega is the patron saint of civil engineers.
