Vega de Valcarce is a place on the Way of St. James and the capital of the municipality of the same name in the province of León in the autonomous community of Castile and León .
In addition to the main town, the municipality includes the villages of Villasinde , Moñón , Ambasmestas , La Portela de Valcarce , Sotogayoso , Ruitelán , Las Herrerías , Samprón , Ransinde , La Braña (Valcarce) , San Julián (Bierzo) , Lindoso , Las Lamas , Otero (Valcarce ) , San Tirso (Valcarce) , El Castro , Laballós , Bargelas , San Pedro Nogal , La Treita , La Faba and Laguna de Castilla .
Vega de Valcarce has a long tradition with the Camino de Santiago, if only for the lack of alternative routes in the transition to Galicia in this area. The feudal lords used this situation at times to extort a road toll from the pilgrims from the Castillo de Autares until a royal ban was issued.
The Castillo de Sarracin, enthroned above the town, belonged to the Knights Templar and was attacked by the peasant associations during the Irmandine Revolt . Emperor Charles V stayed there when he traveled to Germany for the imperial coronation.
