William Blassingame

William Blassingame (born January 13, 1836 in Greenville , South Carolina , † after 1881 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Life

Blassingame grew up in South Carolina. In May 1861, he joined the Confederate States Army . There he participated as a doctor in General McCulloch's Missouri Campaign . As the Civil War drew to a close, Blassingame moved with his wife from Versailles , Missouri to Texas , where they settled in Whitesboro , Grayson County in 1865 . He practiced here as a doctor and also worked as a farmer. In 1875 he was a member of the Constitutional Convention and a year later one of the signing of the new Texas constitution . In February 1876 he ran as a Democrat for a seat in the Texas Senate and was able to prevail over his Republican opponent by almost 1,000 votes . He was a member of the Senate from April 18, 1876 to January 11, 1881.
