Autol (brand)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Motor oil and various lubricants from Agip are sold under the AUTOL brand .

history

In 1855 the company Moebius & Sohn was founded in Hanover . In the early days, precision engineering oils were made from bones and claws, as the industrial production of crude oil did not begin until 1857 in Romania and 1858 in the USA and Germany. With growing industrialization, the need for lubricants grew. The company produced motor oil for cars, motor boats and later also airplanes. To meet the demand, a new plant was built in Hanover-Wülfel , and later another in Würzburg . The company was renamed AUTOL. For this name she received trademark protection in 1901 in the drawing roll of the Berlin Patent Office.

Further branches were established in Basel, Essen, Genoa, Hamburg and London. After the Second World War , production and international business connections were rebuilt. At the 125th anniversary in 1980, the company was still privately owned. Mineral oil-based lubricants as well as synthetic and semi-synthetic products were produced, including industrial cleaners and additives for fuels. In the meantime the company has been taken over by Agip.

Sponsorship

In the 1970s and 1980s, outboard motors for motor boats were almost exclusively two-stroke, so that appropriate oils were essential there. In order to test and improve their products, AUTOL supported several racing boat drivers , mostly from the 850 cm³ class. Peter Walusch from Stade won the 6-hour race in Paris in 1980 in the colors of AUTOL.
