Castrol is a British brand of industrial and automotive lubricants with a range of oil products for most areas of lubricant needs. The Castrol brand is part of the BP Group but has retained its own identity.

history

Castrol was founded on March 9, 1899, when Charles C. Wakefield became a specialist in steam locomotive lubricants. Initially named after the founder, CC Wakefield & Co, the company specialized in selling lubricants to railroad , shipping, mining and textile industries . At the beginning of the 20th century, the company began selling motor oil and shortly thereafter oils for motorcycles , airplanes and racing cars . In 1909 the brand name "Castrol" was introduced. This is derived from the English designation for castor oil (castor oil).

Over the years, this business idea has grown into a globally active group that operates in over 145 countries. Charles Wakefield had the idea of using marketing very early on . From the very beginning, advertising was carried out and partnerships were established with automobile manufacturers in the development of lubricants. Cars, motorcycles and airplanes with Castrol adverts painted on them increased brand awareness. Castrol has also been involved in racing since 1905.

After the First World War , Wakefield opened offices in the USA , India and Australia . In 1939 the Castrol company was already selling its products in Europe , North America , Asia and South Africa .

During the Second World War , the production facilities in Liverpool were bombed. Nevertheless, the British armed forces were supplied with much-needed oils and lubricating equipment. The company went public in 1943 .

In 1950, the year Charles C. Wakefield died, the first Formula 1 Grand Prix started . Castrol supported the Italian Giuseppe Farina , who competed with Alfa Romeo and achieved the first victory in Grand Prix history.

As early as the early 1960s, cars needed fewer oil changes, and competition in the lubricants market became fiercer. The reaction of the Castrol Group (as the company has been called since 1960) was diversification into areas such as metalworking, plastics production , impregnation preparations and anti-corrosion agents. This expansion turned out to be costly, as did development costs because of the new products. The company needed money and in 1966 accepted a takeover offer from Burmah Oil. The newly formed company, renamed Castrol-Burmah, then expanded rapidly. In 2000, Castrol-Burmah was bought by the BP Group and has belonged to the BP Group ever since .

Today Castrol is one of the largest manufacturers of lubricants in the world and in 1974 developed the fully synthetic motor oil "Formula RS", which was Castrol's official racing oil for several decades and has since been replaced by "Castrol Edge" in the racing sector. Castrol lubricants are used in practically all areas of shipping, aviation , industry and road traffic.

Castrol worldwide

Especially in the USA , Castrol is represented as a sponsor of the NHRA Drag Racing and the NASCAR races. In Australia, Castrol is the most widely used oil in the Australian Touring Car / V8 Supercar Series where Castrol supports the Ford team. Castrol is also involved in Australian drag racing and has been supporting Victor Bray there for 17 years.

Products

The company offers engine oils, gear oils and specialty products for the automotive, two-wheeler and commercial vehicle sectors as well as for shipping, aviation and industry. There are currently three product families in the passenger car sector: Castrol EDGE, Castrol Magnatec and Castrol GTX. In April 2014, Castrol EDGE with Titanium, the latest product, was launched in Germany. It is supposed to double the oil film thickness and at the same time reduce the friction in the engine. Just like the Castrol Magnatec and Castrol GTX product lines, the latest generation of lubricants also includes engine oils of various viscosities. Since 2007, Castrol products have been appearing with a uniform global appearance.

Castrol in the motorcycle industry

Castrol has designed its own series of tests for motorcycle engines specifically for motorcycles to evaluate the performance of oils for 4-stroke motorcycles. These oils are developed on motorcycles and have proven themselves on motorcycles.

Castrol has also conducted an independent survey of more than 15,000 consumers around the world to determine what consumers expect from their vehicles and their engine oil. Based on these findings, product lines with a new look and a new image were designed. At the beginning of 2007, Castrol launched these new families of motorcycle oils on the market. The knowledge gained from the study provided the basis for new products and services in the motorcycle industry. The product lines that have been specially developed for the needs of motorcycles are Castrol Power 1 and Act> evo.

Partnerships with automobile manufacturers

Castrol works with various automobile manufacturers (Original Equipment Manufacturers, or OEMs for short) in the development of new lubricants. Well-known manufacturers of motor vehicles (cars and trucks) such as the Volkswagen Group , BMW, Land Rover , Jaguar , Volvo , MAN , DAF , Honda , ŠKODA and Seat recommend Castrol products.

Speed records

In order to increase the awareness of the Castrol brand, Charles C. Wakefield particularly supported those lone fighters who wanted to set new world speed records in all conceivable categories. Charles C. Wakefield personally presented the "Wakefield Trophy Award" for world speed records on land. In the period from 1920 to the end of 1930, Castrol was particularly involved in setting speed records.

For the follow-up project, the development of the ThrustSSC , Castrol was the first sponsor. Andy Green was the first person to break the sound barrier with a land vehicle with the Thrust-SCC in 1997 at 1,227.983 km / h.
