Augustinas Savickas (born May 12, 1919 in Copenhagen , Denmark ; † June 24, 2012 in Vilnius , Lithuania ), also Augustino Savickio , was a Lithuanian painter, art critic, university professor and author.

Augustinas Savickas was the younger of two sons of the Lithuanian diplomat Jurgis Savickis and his wife, the dentist Ida Trakiner-Savickienė (1894-1944). Their wealthy (Jewish) family lived in Saint Petersburg . Her father, Leon Trakiner, owned a factory there which was involved in the manufacture of glass products. His older brother was the painter Algirdas Savickis (1917–1943), who was murdered in the Kauen ghetto (Kowno / Kaunas).

Life

Due to his father's diplomatic activities, he was born like his older brother in the Danish capital and lived in the Finnish capital Helsinki from 1923 to 1927. After his parents' divorce, he returned to Lithuania with his mother. There he graduated from the 3rd grammar school and attended the first Lithuanian art school Kauno meno mokyklą (KMM) in Kaunas. In 1939/40 he studied in Switzerland at the Faculty of Sociology at the University of Geneva . At that time his mother lived in France and Belgium. After the occupation by the Red Army in June 1940, he first worked in Kaunas for the evacuation commission and studied at the art academy in Vilnius .

After the invasion of the German Wehrmacht , he fled to the Soviet Union in 1941, where he worked on a kolkhoz near Novosibirsk until 1944 . In 1942/43 and 1944/45 he was used as a soldier in the 50th Lithuanian Division of the Red Army .

After the end of the war he studied painting with Justinas Vienožinskis (1886–1960) and Vytautas Mackevičius (1911–1991) at the Vilniaus dailės akademija in Vilnius until 1949 . From 1949 to 1951 he was a board member for arts affairs of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic (LSSR MT). From 1951 he was a member of the Lithuanian Artists Association (Lietuvos dailininkų sąjunga). From 1951 to 1972 he worked as a lecturer at the State Art Institute (LSSR dailės institute), graduated in art criticism in 1963 and held an extraordinary professorship at this institute from 1965. In 1958 he joined the Communist Party .

In July 1963 he testified to the shooting of his relatives in the Globke trial brought against him by the GDR against the commentator and co-author of the Nuremberg Race Laws , Hans Globke , who was appointed by Konrad Adenauer as head of the Federal Chancellery .

From 1973 to 1979 he conducted research at the Lithuanian Institute of History (Lietuvos istorijos institutas). From 1985 to 1993 he taught at the LSSR Art Institute as a professor of painting. From 1988 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1993 he was awarded a doctorate in art.

Savickas died at the age of 93. He was buried in the Kairėnai cemetery in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius .

  • On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Algirdas Savickis, a painting exhibition was held in the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, from February 13 to May 21, 2017. Works by Jurgis Savickis, his sons Algirdas and Augustinas as well as his grandson Raimondas Savickas and his great-granddaughter Ramunė Savikaitė-Meškėlienė were shown.
